Beautiful paintings celebrating the intricacies of Mother Earth, an inspired artist with an exquisite ability to capture the variety and fragility of nature.
A few months ago I was searching around for a birthday gift for my husband. He is an avid birder, so I checked out the bird paintings that Jane had on offer. I showed him her work and he absolutely fell in love with "The toucan is a curious bird". I don't know if other people have a hard time finding presents for their man but I find it very difficult. Robert's reaction was enough for me, so I bought the painting for him and it is now enhancing our dining room. Last month we had people over and he very proudly showed off the new painting. Jane's work is even better in the "flesh" so to speak than on the web. She is technically a master but even better her paintings have life.
Jane's use of bold lines and colours can't help but draw your eye and hold it there as you enter into her world of nature. But she is equally able to be subtle in much of her work with varying tones and fine detail that come to light as you explore her work at close quarters. A true artist at her best.
To my eyes, Jane Tomlinson has, over the years, produced a body of the most life affirming, colourful and magical contemporary art around. Scenes and depictions of a range of subjects, mostly drawn from the natural world of which she is such a fan, occupy a beguiling hinterland between realism and the magical and as such, bestride detailed observation and whimsical imagination with delightful results. There's also humour present, especially in Jane's detailed but almost otherworldly maps of places that offer an unfamiliar view of the familiar. A real, natural and warm talent to be enjoyed and appreciated by anyone with a love of the visual arts.
There's a shimmering, organic quality about Jane's paintings, where acrylics and watercolours capture unique moments in Oxfordshire. Her paintings may depict a badger snuffling amongst bluebells, a set of ripe conkers, or even a really rude toad. Taken together, her collections may seem like chaos, but they represent a particularly beautiful and idiosyncratic chaos that would look damn fine on anyone's wall. Take each painting on its own, and you still have an excellent work of art.
