Oxfordshire's tourist spots are full of eateries which have such pretty flower boxes and fancy menu descriptions that they can get away with charging absurd prices for food which has little style and even less substance, so we didn't expect much: but the Swan is categorically a last-resort option even for lottery winners. We called to check they were serving and then made a substantial detour to get here and find the entrance, to be told that parts of the menu weren't available anyway, for reasons which made no sense. The best we could order was three embarrassingly ordinary sandwiches (the steak was dry, tough, and unappetising; the bacon and brie was the better option, so despite the price it gets the Swan a second star it hardly deserves) and two portions of chips (which were so inadequate as to make any further evaluation academic). The sandwiches were more than 10 each; the chips were 4 a portion. I enclose a photo of an untouched 4 portion of chips for your entertainment, and will say no more.(okay, I will. 14. There were 14 chips in this portion. That's nearly 30p per chip. Your choice. Your choice entirely.)
The Old swan offers a typical Cotswold setting for a leisurely lunch or dinner. The menu is a bit more expensive than usual for a pub but you get a beautiful setting, with linen napkins and a nicely equipped ladies room! A lovely stop off after a bracing walk in the area.
Looks nice and old worldy - can't recommend the food though. Overpriced and below average. See picture of a 10 salmon and cream cheese sandwich. Cheap, thin white loaf and some crisps. Really? Looks like hospital food.Edit: no this wasn't part of any afternoon tea. It was a standalone, thin sandwich on cheap white bread for 10. Still, lovely place, nice staff, hopefully food had improved now, but can't see myself going back.Added one star for communication.
Lovely afternoon spent at the Swan pub. Delicious lunch and fantastic service. Pub is beautiful! Perfect place to spend an afternoon by the log fire. We will be visiting again!
We had the most wonderful Sunday lunch. Cooked to perfection and incredibly flavoursome, Best roast I've had in many a year. Staff were great. Our party occupied the table for four hours and were the last to leave but this wan't a problem for the staff. We would definitely eat here again if we were in the area.
